Most people come to a chiropractor because something hurts. At The DOC of West Loop, that's where we start, but it's not where we stop.

Chiropractic care addresses the biomechanical side of the body: the joints, the spine, the nervous system pathways that control how you move and how you feel. Functional medicine addresses the biochemical side: the hormones, the inflammatory markers, the nutrients, the systems that either support your body or quietly work against it. One without the other leaves half the picture unread.

We call this the whole health concept, and it's relatively rare to find it inside a chiropractic practice in Chicago. It's why patients who come in for back pain sometimes leave with answers about their thyroid. It's why a cholesterol number that's been climbing gets asked the same question we ask about neck pain: not "how do we manage this?" but "why is this happening?"

What Functional Medicine Actually Looks Like Here

The process starts with labs. We review any prior bloodwork you've had done, identify what's missing, and run a current comparison, either through your primary care provider or ordered directly from our West Loop office. Illinois MDs don't always cooperate with chiropractic referrals, and Chicago patients know this frustration well: you ask your doctor for an ultrasound on your chiropractor's recommendation, and you're told to do six weeks of PT instead. When that happens, we order the labs ourselves. You get the answers either way.

From there, we build a plan based on objective data and your health history together. Not a list of supplements. Not a one-size protocol. The first intervention is almost always lifestyle: food, sleep, movement, stress. "Let food be thy medicine first" is not a slogan here. It's the actual clinical sequence. Supplementation comes in only when the body is genuinely deficient or unable to absorb what it needs. Most practices lead with the supplement rack. We don't.

Conditions We Address Through Functional Medicine

The range is wide because the framework applies broadly. Common presentations at our West Loop clinic include:

Hashimoto's and underactive thyroid, hormonal disruption and irregular cycles, endometriosis, infertility, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, GI complaints including IBS and acid reflux, autoimmune conditions, high cholesterol, blood sugar dysregulation, anxiety, and food or environmental sensitivities, including specific testing through third-party labs for metals, foods, and environmental triggers.

For patients managing arthritis, we look at nutrient levels, inflammatory markers, and the immune picture together. For patients with recurring seasonal allergies, we dig into what their immune system is reacting to and why, not just which antihistamine to rotate.

If the origin turns out to be vascular or outside our scope, we refer you to the right provider. We maintain co-managed relationships with physicians at Rush University Medical Center, just a short distance from our West Loop location, and send care narratives when other providers are involved.

The Grail Test: Early Cancer Detection in Chicago

Through our partnership with Rush University Hospital, we offer the Grail test, one of the only evidence-based early cancer detection tools currently available. A simple blood draw screens for DNA fragments associated with more than 50 types of cancer, most of which produce no symptoms in early stages.

We offer the Grail test at cost, without markup. The goal is access, not revenue. If you want to know what's happening in your body before it becomes a crisis, this is one of the most concrete tools available to Chicago patients right now.

Why This Lives Inside a Chiropractic Practice

The body doesn't separate the way the medical system does. A patient with high cholesterol and neck pain isn't two separate problems. A patient with endometriosis and hip pain isn't two separate problems. When you can address both the mechanical and the biochemical in the same West Loop office, with providers who talk to each other, the care plan reflects what's actually going on, not just the complaint that got you in the door.

Root cause. Real results. Personalized care. That's what we're addressing.
